Flexible Antenna Routing for Your Wireless Monitor System

The Shure AD221 Axient Digital PSM 2-Way Passive Combiner/Splitter combines two incoming RF signals into one output or divides one incoming RF signal into two outputs. It provides a compact way to adapt antenna connections in wireless in-ear monitoring systems used by worship teams, touring productions, theaters, and broadcast crews.

This AD221 model operates from 470–960 MHz. Its passive design and mounting back plate make it useful for installations that need a straightforward combining or splitting accessory without a larger multiport combiner.

Key Features

  • Two-way operation: Supports either two-to-one combining or one-to-two splitting.
  • Axient Digital PSM integration: Supports signal gain compensation with compatible Shure ADTD and ADTQ transmitters.
  • BNC connections: Three RF connectors provide the common connection and two branches.
  • Compact construction: Cast-aluminum housing with a back plate designed for mounting.

Combining and Splitting Explained

In a combining arrangement, two transmitter RF feeds share one outgoing antenna path. In a splitting arrangement, one RF feed is divided between two outgoing paths. Choose the arrangement according to the transmitter configuration and antenna layout.

The AD221 routes radio-frequency signals, not the audio connections from a mixing console. It does not create additional monitor mixes or add wireless transmission channels.

Plan for Signal Loss

Passive combining and splitting introduce signal loss. Shure specifies a typical insertion loss of 4 dB for the AD221. Compatible ADTD and ADTQ transmitters support compensation to help account for combiner loss; the AD221 itself is not an RF amplifier. Include this loss when planning the system's antenna and cable arrangement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the AD221 combine signals and split signals?

Yes. It supports either function, depending on how the RF connections are arranged.

Does it support the G57 frequency band?

Yes. The 470–608 MHz G57 band falls within the AD221's 470–960 MHz operating range.

Does splitting one signal produce two independent monitor mixes?

No. Splitting distributes the incoming RF signal to two paths; it does not create new audio content.

Is this the same model as the AD221X?

No. The AD221 covers 470–960 MHz, while the AD221X covers 960–1260 MHz. Select the model that matches your system's frequencies.
